Jane Goodall
Animal Rights Activist (April 3, 1934-present)
Jane Goodall, daughter of Herbert Goodall and Margaret Joseph, was born on April 3, 1934 in London, England. She had one sister named Judy and they were raised in London and Bournemouth. Jane was fond of animals ever since she was a child. In her spare time, she often observed native birds and animals, read a variety of literature that pertained to zoology and ethology.
Once Jane and Clo arrived in Africa, Jane met a famous anthropologist named Louis Leakey. Leakey initially hired Goodall as a secretary, but eventually invited her to perform a number of tasks and participate in a variety of studies, which led to Goodall's fascination in primates.
Jane Goodall graduated from high school in 1952 and began to work at the Oxford University, typing documents and learning how to be a secretary. She did this up until 1956, when her friend Clo Manage invited Jane to visit her family's farm in Kenya. After Clo presented this opportunity, Jane quit her job and moved back to Bournemouth so she could waitress and save enough to pay for a roundtrip from England to Africa. Little did Jane know, this trip to Africa would forever change her life.
